Il secondo dopoguerra
I costi della seconda guerra mondiale furono raccapriccianti: 55 milioni di morti, due terzi dei quali civili; oltre 32 milioni nella sola Europa, di cui 20 milioni i sovietici (il 12% della popolazione) e 5 milioni i tedeschi; in Estremo Oriente 13 milioni di cinesi uccisi e quasi 2 milioni i giapponesi. Europa, Giappone, intere aree della Cina erano distrutte; 25 milioni i senzatetto in URSS. Città rase al suolo dai bombardamenti o cancellate dalla bomba atomica. La conseguenza principale del conflitto fu il declino degli stati europei e l'emergere di due "superpotenze": gli Stati Uniti e l'Unione Sovietica.
Cosa successe in Francia?
Per la Francia il bilancio del secondo conflitto mondiale fu pesantissimo. Secondo Dupeux (1979), difatti, se le perdite umane risultarono inferiori a quelle della guerra del 1914-18, le devastazioni materiali furono assai superiori. Nelle fasi in cui il paese fu pienamente coinvolto nelle vicende belliche ingenti distruzioni interessarono le aziende agricole, gli impianti industriali, i porti, le infrastrutture e la flotta mercantile; mentre nel lungo periodo dell'occupazione tedesca esso subì cospicue requisizioni di prodotti agricoli, materie prime e mezzi di trasporto.
Le azioni nazionalistiche
Un aspetto di grande rilievo della politica economica seguita all'indomani della liberazione fu rappresentato dalle nazionalizzazioni che interessarono molte importanti imprese. L'intervento dello stato interessò fondamentalmente il settore finanziario, energetico e dei trasporti.
Guerra d'indipendenza algerina (1954-1962)
Nel contesto della Guerra Fredda tra USA e URSS, e in concomitanza con numerosi conflitti esplosi in varie colonie a seguito della crescita di esigenze nazionalistiche sorte dopo la seconda guerra mondiale, scoppiò anche in Algeria la guerra tra ribelli algerini e coloni francesi.
